KOMBUCHA LEATHER EXPERIMENTS

KOMBUCHA LEATHER EXPERIMENTS
I've been wanting to experiment with biomaterials for some time now and kombucha leather was an obvious and easy choice since I already make kombucha at home.
The following project shows the different steps and the final raw material. Stay tuned for upcoming applications!
First of all, the scobi is harvested in separate containers. The size of the compartment is going to define the final size of the scobi and therefore the kombucha leather. I used the same recipe as the kombucha I drink (black tea & sugar).
After a week, the scobi has developed, forming a new 1 or 2mm layer on top. This layer can then be taken out to dry.
Once dried, the kombucha looks like leather! I tried different textures by adding coffee grounds & colorants.
Thank you!
